The lodges, as well as our reception can be found at TH41 and TH42, Long Street, Thesen Island Harbour Town in Knysna, South Africa.
Thesen Islands’ Lodges are composed of two apartments: Lookout and Crow’s Nest. The apartments are directly opposite each other, almost identical, comprising of a kitchen, dining space, living room and veranda and with 5 en-suite bedrooms.
Each room can hold a maximum of 2 adults and some rooms also cater for an additional child (<12 years old). Lookout Lodge holds a maximum of 10 adults and 2 additional children; Crow’s Nest accommodates 10 adults, and a further 5 children.
Can I smoke there?
According to the Tobacco Products Control Act (No. 83) of 1993, guests are not permitted to smoke anywhere inside of the lodges, whether it be in the common area or the guests’ private rooms. Guests are, however, allowed to smoke outside on the veranda, just off the common area, or on the balconies of their private rooms.
Does every room have a balcony?
There are only 2 rooms that have private balconies, both in Lookout Lodge, however each lodge has a large veranda which is accessible to all its guests.
I’m booked for self-catering accommodation – can I cook a meal in the kitchen?
Yes. Our kitchen is fully stocked with all appliances and utensils one would need to do any cooking.
Does it get hot in Knysna? Is there any way to cool down?
Knysna has a very moderate climate, as do most coastal towns in South Africa. We do have the very occasional “scorcher” in our summer months (December, January, February), reaching around 35°C/95°F. If the sea breeze isn’t enough to cool you down, in each room you will find either a stand-alone fan or a ceiling fan to make those warmer days more bearable.
Does it get cold there?
In winter (June-August) we may have a cold spell, but not snowy conditions. The average low temperature over the winter months in Knysna is roughly 8°C/46°F. In each room, guest can find a small panel heater, but the main source of heat is the gas fireplace in the common area, which acts as central heating, and warms the entire apartment.
All TVs (a small flat screen in each room, as well as a large flat screen in the common area) have access to selected channels from the national premium cable broadcasting service, DSTV. These channels include SABC1, SABC2, SABC3, etv, Mnet Comedy, Mnet Premier, Supersport1, Supersport2, Supersport3, Mnet Family, Mnet Movies and EuroNews. A DVD+ player is also available for use in the common area’s TV, only in Crow’s Nest Lodge.
At the moment, we make use of a voucher system for guest Wi-Fi usage offered by the Islands’ main internet provider, Eden Telecom. Each guest is entitled to 500MB voucher per day (free of charge). These vouchers contain a username and password. Each voucher caters for 1 device. If more data is required, please ask for additional vouchers from the front office.
We offer guests use of a digital alarm clock, a hair dryer and a standard 2-prong South African adapter. Theft of these extras will result in a replacement fee.

We offer a housekeeping every 3rd day.
- Daily making of beds.
- Daily cleaning of bathrooms and kitchen.
- Bed linen and towels are changed every third day (unless required otherwise).
Services do not include:
- Washing of guests’ clothing or personal items (washer and dryer available for self-catering guests).
- Dish washing (dishwasher available to all guests)
- Any food preparation
Unfortunately we do not offer “family rooms” at Thesen Islands’ Lodges. We are able to accommodate your family of 4+ members, just not in a single room.
Thesen Islands’ Lodges welcomes children and offers a discount for children under the age of 12, and those under age of 2 stay free! Camp-cots are available, but please enquire in advance. Some rooms can accommodate an additional child in a single room.
What happens if I have a rowdy neighbour in the Lodges?
If you are ever bothered by another guest staying in the same lodge, please contact the manager on +27 (0)82 792 1578 immediately. The complaint against another guest will be handled as an anonymous tip, and no names will be mentioned. Should the noise persist, the offending party in question will asked to find other accommodation.
